Duties:
Performs gardening tasks in accordance with seasonal schedules or project plans for assigned area. Determines the quantities of plants, seeds, fertilizer, and other materials needed for specific areas. Initiates nursery and cold frame beds and selects proper fungicides, insecticides for the control of common plant disease, plant insects, and weeds. Thins or transplants plants where they are too close together or too large for their location. Trims trees and shrubs and prunes to remove diseased limbs or excess branches. Reproduces plants through cuttings, rooting, grafting and layering processes. Operates gasoline and diesel powered farm type tractors with attached or towed equipment. Equipment attachments include rotary towed mowers, fertilizer distributor, seeders, sprayers, and trailers for transporting grounds and maintenance supplies and materials. Operates motor vehicles to transport self, others, equipment, material, and supplied to work sites throughout the installation.About the Position: Applicant will work in a historic garden landscape started in 1915. The applicant will work in all types of weather conditions in a safe and effective manor. The grounds at LWSC are historic English landscape style with the original character of more than 500 species and 1,500 varieties of plants from around the world. Additional duties will take place along the Montlake and Fremont ship canal.

Qualifications:

Trades and Labor The ability to do seasonal gardening tasks, using common hand and power tools such as seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayers, mowers, blowers and sweepers, chain saws, tractors and chippers. The ability to perform routine maintenance to this equipment. Knowledge of basic plant types to follow instructions on which ones are to be placed in certain locations. Knowledge of the components of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers to measure and mix specified amounts of each following instructions on product labels, and to apply or spray fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides properly, according to instructions.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Incumbent exerts moderately heavy physical effort lifting objects from 40 to 80 pounds. The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending and stooping. Occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation and frequently lifts objects, such as bags of fertilizer, grasses, seeds, etc. Physical dexterity is needed to handle tools and work around machinery or equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work may be done outside or in a greenhouse. While working outside is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot and in chilly or rainy weather. Duties require exposure to dirt, dust, mud, and chemical sprays. May wear protective clothing, such as gloves, headgear, safety shoes, and boots. There is a chance of minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes and occasionally the possibility of a more serious injury.

REQUIRED LICENSING:
Employee must have and maintain a Class B commercial driver's license and a pesticide applicator's license as a condition of employment.Experience and training that furnish the knowledges, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position consistent with accepted practices of the trade. Ability to use and maintain appropriate tools and equipment. Ability to read, understand, and apply instruction and other materials related to the job. Ability to do the work of the position under normal supervision. Ability to inspect technical work related to this position. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crawling, and kneeling for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. Worker may lift and move materials weighing up to 40 pounds and, occasionally heavier items with assistance. Experience and training that provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position consistent with accepted practices of the trade. Possess and maintain the physical ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
