PRIMARY DUTIES: Reporting to the Landscape Supervisor, work with a team of gardeners in close proximity to the public, scheduling and performing work and tasks around events that are held indoors and outdoors across a 74-acre campus. This gardening team participates in planting, transplanting, weeding, pruning and care of seasonal plants, perennials, shrubs, and trees and maintains approximately 10 acres of intensely used, high quality sand-based turf. Work independently and, from time to time, lead small crews of intermittent and/or regular laborers. Evaluate conditions and situations in the field and take appropriate action without direct supervision on a regular basis. Participate in design, planning and installation of campus landscapes. Daily and seasonal operations require demonstrated knowledge of standard methods, materials, procedures, tools and equipment associated with landscaping and gardening. Gardeners operate and perform minor maintenance on Maxicom, a computerized automated, centrally controlled irrigation system. Use power equipment including riding mower, aerator/seeder, small tractor, pickup, backpack blower, edger and chainsaw. Operate forklift and manlift in support of gardening operations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two years experience as a journey level landscaper or gardener. A Washington Public Pesticide Operator’s License with an Aquatics or Public Health endorsement must be acquired within one year of hire. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Must be willing and able to work outside in all kinds of weather. Must be able to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to work effectively and safely in close proximity to the public. Must be at least 18 years old, and have a valid Driver's License at time of application. The successful candidate must provide a complete driver’s abstract.

General familiarity with computers for communication and time keeping purposes and knowledge of Maxicom Central Control irrigation systems are highly desirable.

We are looking for someone that is strong, intelligent, has a good sense of humor, and is enjoyable to work with. We hire more on personality and potential than experience in the field. We train on the job. This is a small firm and we all get our hands dirty. This is a very stable company and we do one project at a time. We landscape in the kirkland, bellevue, and seattle areas. We are based out of Kirkland but meet at jobsites.
You must have your own transportation to and from the jobsite. This means that you have a car or a motorcycle. Sorry no bus passes, mopeds, or bicycles. You are never asked to use your car for work, just to get to and from work. You must be a non-smoker, and in good physical condition. Everyone that works here are friends and we try to make the work place fun and enjoyable.

Job Summary

May oversee the work of technical and clerical employees engaged in supporting departmental administrative functions and train individuals associated with projects.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, urban forestry, environmental science, or natural resource preferred or combination of education and experience.
Five years or more years of professional experience in parks, streetscape, or urban forestry contract/project management, including design, permitting, preparation of contractual documents and project supervision.
The equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience will be taken into consideration when determining whether a candidate possesses the necessary skills for the position.
Experience in long range planning and site planning, project management.
Experience in administering contracts with consultants and contractors.
Working knowledge of laws, regulations and ordinances directly related to project planning and construction work.

Program Description:
The Apple Corps, a program of Solid Ground, works to reduce hunger, obesity, and poor health in children and families in Seattle and King County through school and community-based efforts. Apple Corps recruits and trains Americorps national service members to provide activities to children and families who are most at-risk for malnutrition and poor health by: promoting healthy eating and active living programs in conjunction with community partners; by increasing access to healthy foods; and increasing community awareness about the benefits of proper nutrition. The community based program areas of the P-Patch Program are community gardening, market gardening, youth gardening, and food policy in the City of Seattle. Program Description:
The Apple Corps, a program of Solid Ground, works to reduce hunger, obesity, and poor health in children and families in Seattle and King County through school and community-based efforts. Apple Corps recruits and trains Americorps national service members to provide activities to children and families who are most at-risk for malnutrition and poor health by: promoting healthy eating and active living programs in conjunction with community partners; by increasing access to healthy foods; and increasing community awareness about the benefits of proper nutrition. Apple Corps members are assigned local agencies to empower youth and families with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives.
P-Patch Program:
This position places an Apple Corps national service member with the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ P-Patch Program. The P-Patch Program, in conjunction with the not-for-profit P-Patch Trust, provides organic community garden space for residents of 70 Seattle neighborhoods. The community based program areas of the P-Patch Program are community gardening, market gardening, youth gardening, and food policy in the City of Seattle. These programs serve all citizens of Seattle with an emphasis on low-income and immigrant populations and youth. The P-Patch community gardens offer 2500 plots serve more than 6000 urban gardeners on 23 acres of land.

Assure the efficient and timely submission of all required operational, financial, budgetary, and related reports. Maintain knowledge of current and projected industry developments through continuous attention to industry periodicals, and participation in relevant trade associations and organizations. Maintain open communication with supervisors and clients.Develop and maintain a positive work relationship with Superintendent, County staff, peers, and subordinates to ensure optimum flow of information.Transport of equipment, materials, and tools to job site.Assure proper use, care, and inventory of company equipment, parts, and tools assigned by performing pre-operation checks, routine maintenance, and minor in-the field repairs of equipment as necessary.Other duties as assigned and appropriate. I would like someone who could work in the garden during the labor intense time of year and hopefully they can learn more about our goals for this garden and make some very useful suggestions that can be implemented. Excellent pruning skills would be desirable. I have $540 budgeted for this person and was thinking $15.00 per hour, 4-6 hours per week. If it was 5 hours per week, that would provide us with a little over 7 weeks of assistance and them that much time to learn about our public garden.

I am interested in strategic planning – future ideas we could budget for. I would like someone to consider what customers would find useful to see in our garden, ideas we could implement that are in keeping with our theme of wise stewardship of our natural resources; and plant changes – ideas of alternative plants that could be installed and others that could be taken out to make the garden even better. Also, I am interested in finding ways to show the steps to waterwise gardening so that a self guided tour could yield much more information. Things like showing proper and improper soil preparation; right plant right place; irrigation tips for water efficiency. We have signage, but something hands on or technologically advanced could be something we could budget for. I have $360 for this process – I was thinking $15.00 per hour so a total of 24 hours.

Currently, we are a two man design and build company focusing on native and edible plantings alongside high quality hardscapes. We are a young and growing company, and so while this position will be physically demanding, there is a good opportunity for advancement and merit raises.
Qualifications: Prior work experience is preferred, as well as a person who is interested in sustainability, stonework, woodwork, and horticulture. Must be able to talk to clients and represent the company. We require a valid driver's license, good driving record and reliable transportation to job sites. Must be able to lift at least 80 lbs.
