Overlake Golf & Country Club is a private, Audubon certified 18-hole golf course in Medina, WA. There are over 50 landscape beds on and around the golf course the landscaping department cares for. Landscaping beds include an herb garden, several evergreen and perennial beds, and seasonal annual displays around the clubhouse. The position of Assistant Horticulturist consists of helping and communicating with the Head Horticulturist of daily maintenance of these landscape grounds.

Duties:
- Daily clean up of clubhouse parking lot and surrounding areas
- Mow club house lawns
- Weeding of landscape beds
- Planting, watering, and mulching of beds and annual displays
- Fertilizing seasonal annuals, beds, and clubhouse lawns
- Pruning of shrubs and trees
- Care of indoor plants
- Help assist with seasonal summer worker
- Assist golf course with seasonal aerification
- Some weekend and summer tournament work required

Qualifications:
- Degree in Horticulture or related field

South Puget Sound Community College is recruiting for a Grounds and Nursery Specialist 2 to fill a vacant position in the Buildings and Grounds division. This position reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor and is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of campus grounds, landscaping, and athletic fields. This position is also involved in litter control, irrigation system maintenance, and storm water system maintenance. Recruitment is open to all applicants whose knowledge, skills, and abilities meet the qualifications for this position as stated below.

This is a full-time position starting at $2,068.00 per month (Range 29 of the Department of Personnel Salary Schedule) with periodic increases to $2.663.00.

Desirable Qualifications
 Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing; AND one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.
 A valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
 Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time outdoors in all types of weather; bend, climb and reach; and lift, pull or push objects weighing up to 65 pounds.
 Duties must be performed in a safe manner.
 Experience with and ability to climb ladders and operate heavy machinery.

Responsibilities and duties of the Grounds and Nursery Specialist 2 include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Prepare soil for planting; plant, transplant, trim and water plants, trees, flowers and shrubs.
 Seed, place grass sod, mow, irrigate, fertilize and maintain lawns.
 Apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer to lawns, flowers and shrubs.
 Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe and control weeds in flowerbeds and lawns;
 Remove debris, leaves and brush from areas such as sidewalks, streets, and stairs, ramps, parking lots and lawn areas;
 Install, repair and operate sprinkler irrigation systems;
 Inspect and clean storm drains, catch basins, inlets and outlets and maintain retaining structures for the campus holding pond systems.
 Maintain athletic fields by seeding, repairs, mowing, and watering.
 Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc.
 Remove snow and de-ice walkways and roads; operate snow removal equipment.
 Operate power tools and motorized equipment such as tractors, mowers (both hand and riding), weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, aerators, sod cutters, Rototillers, front-end loaders, sweeper blowers, aerators, mobile compressors and small trucks, etc.
 Use hand tools such as shovels, hoses, rakes, pruning shears, loppers, wheelbarrows, hand edgers and pesticide sprayers, etc.
 Clean, service and make repairs to tools and equipment. Clean shop and grounds areas in the Buildings & Grounds compound.
 Clean building courtyard areas not already assigned to building custodians.

Harvest Coordinator - $DOE

Background:
This project is developed by City Fruit and funded through a grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. City Fruit is an organization dedicated to promoting the value of urban fruit, neighborhood by neighborhood. Its advisory board includes members that are associated with leading organizations in Seattle including Solid Ground, Seattle Tilth, Seattle Tree Fruit Association, Phinney Neighborhood Association, and Seattle & King County Public Health.

We are dedicated to reducing wasted city-grown fruit, which is too often let to rot on the ground. We envision a time when members of the community will work together to optimize this resource—by growing healthier trees, harvesting their fruit, donating it, preserving it and—in future years—selling some of it to support the entire process. The coordinator will play a crucial role in our efforts to make this vision a reality.

Project description:
The coordinator will manage a fruit harvest in the Phinney neighborhood. The project will last six months, with the bulk of work completed from July through November. The final report will be submitted by May 2010. This is not a full time position; it is a part time contract job.

Duties
The coordinator will:
· expand our existing list of tree owners in the Phinney, Ballard and Greenwood neighborhoods who are interested in donating their fruit
· map public and private fruit trees in the Phinney neighborhood using our online mapping tool
· recruit and train additional harvest volunteers
· develop support infrastructure, including acquiring ladders, drop off locations and storage boxes
· organize volunteers to harvest each tree as it ripens and ensure that the fruit is delivered to organizations that can use it
· expand on our list of organizations that can use fruit by contacting neighborhood organizations that offer food to needy people and maintaining a list of such organizations
· document results including when each tree is harvested, the quality of the fruit that is harvested, the volume harvested and where the fruit is donated
· sell a portion of the fruit to local area restaurants
· organize workshops about pruning, thinning, pest prevention and canning
· work with consultant to help provide data for business plan
· work with consultant to develop more efficient ways to manage the fruit harvest
· submit final report summarizing the harvest
· handle paperwork required by the city

Horticulture Volunteer at the ZOO

Horticultural Volunteer Opportunity


Purpose:
To provide hands-on experience and learning opportunities to students Horticulture programs.

General Description:
The Woodland Park Zoo’s horticulture program follows the tenets of Integrated Pest Management and Plant Health Care while meeting aesthetic and exhibit specific goals. Hands-on horticultural experiences and opportunities will be provided through three educational venues at the Woodland Park Zoo; the Rose Garden, the interior exhibits, and general Zoo grounds. Equal time and weight will be given to each venue as the student progresses through this program.

Venue specifics:
Rose Garden-The Rose Garden has been managed naturally since 2007 and is maintained to a high visual aesthetic standard. Students will learn natural landscape management techniques actively caring for this 2.5 acre garden comprised of over 5,000 roses; perennial, shrub, and tree beds; turf; two water features; two landscape structures; and several Natural Yard Care demonstration gardens.
Interior exhibits-The Zoo’s interior exhibits include the entire Tropical Rain Forest building and several other interior animal spaces and are supported out of 4,000 square feet of greenhouse space. The orchid collection and Silverspot butterfly programs are also primary programs. Students will learn greenhouse and interior plantscape management techniques actively caring for the plants both in the greenhouses and in the exhibits.
General Zoo grounds-The Zoo grounds occupy 92 acres comprised of 5 specific biomes and the surrounding general landscape. Management of the existing landscapes and installation of landscape improvements are the primary tasks. Students will learn landscape management and installation techniques actively participating in landscape maintenance and installation projects.

Process:
-Each student will be required to meet with Zoo staff to develop their volunteer opportunity including educational goals and time commitment subject to Zoo and educational institution approval.
-Each student will be required to take the ½ day Woodland Park Zoo orientation program before beginning the program.
-Each student will be required to fill out Woodland Park Zoo volunteer paperwork including the background check form.
-Each student will be required to track volunteer hours.
-Each student will be required to fill out a volunteer program evaluation sheet specific to the Woodland Park Zoo.

Location
There is one permanent full-time position in Spokane, Washington. Inspection territory includes: Stevens, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Whitman, Lincoln, Asotin, Garfield, Adams, Ferry, Benton, Franklin and Columbia counties. This position will operate from a home-based office anywhere between Tri-Cities and Spokane and will be dependant upon the applicants geographic location and qualifications.

Duties
Inspect organic food producers, processors and handlers for compliance with National Organic Standards. Inspections involve an examination and evaluation of soil management, crop rotation, seeds, pest management, and records. Inspectors evaluate Organic Crop, Livestock and Handling System Plans and write reports that describe compliance with organic standards. Violations of organic standards are documented through reports, samples, photos, and audits of records. Inspections of farmers markets and retail stores that sell organic food products are also conducted. Inspectors also collect samples of organic food products for analysis of possible contaminants. Inspectors evaluate materials and labels to determine compliance with organic standards, make field observations of soil and crop conditions, review organic system plans to ensure the integrity of organic food products, and conduct audits of production and sales records.

Desirable Qualifications -- Environmental Specialist 2
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field and one year of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.

One year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 1.

OR
A Master's degree in one of the above fields.

One Year Internship
In one the Pacific Northwest’s premium gardens

A one-year internship is available at the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. The position is available starting early summer with some flexibility to accommodate applicants’ schedules. The work is focused on garden maintenance and it is essential that candidates be prepared for rigorous physical labor. Tasks include watering, pruning, potting and some propagation. There will also be an opportunity to learn the plant accession data base.

The Miller Garden is a three-acre garden with an exceptional collection of woody and herbaceous plants. The facilities include a small greenhouse, an alpine house, cold frames, lath house and a small nursery to support garden operations. We are open to the public by appointment only.

We are a very small staff so it is imperative that candidates have a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic. Horticulture or related education is preferred. Priority is given to applicants currently in school or recently graduated.

Position Summary
The internship with the Bellevue Botanical Garden is a temporary position and is offered as an educational opportunity to students in the fields of botany, horticulture or related fields. Interns work 16 hours per week. The intern works a regular schedule, to be set by mutual consent of the Garden Manager, Garden Supervisor and Intern, plus some holidays. While some of the intern’s time will be spent gaining horticultural knowledge working under the supervision of grounds staff, most of the intern’s time will be spent working on collections documentation and mapping with volunteers, grounds staff, and partner group leaders, under the supervision of the Garden Manager. The 2009 internship will focus on collections documentation in the newly-renovated NPA Border and the Waterwise Garden. The internship will last approximately 9 months. At the end of the internship the intern will have gained knowledge about the operation and management of a botanical garden, with special emphasis on collections management.

Field work is performed outside in full range of weather conditions. Overtime is not a guarantee but may be required.
