Position Summary
The internship with the Bellevue Botanical Garden is a temporary position and is offered as an educational opportunity to students in the fields of botany, horticulture or related fields. Interns work 16 hours per week. The intern works a regular schedule, to be set by mutual consent of the Garden Manager, Garden Supervisor and Intern, plus some holidays. While some of the intern’s time will be spent gaining horticultural knowledge working under the supervision of grounds staff, most of the intern’s time will be spent working on collections documentation and mapping with volunteers, grounds staff, and partner group leaders, under the supervision of the Garden Manager. The 2009 internship will focus on collections documentation in the newly-renovated NPA Border and the Waterwise Garden. The internship will last approximately 9 months. At the end of the internship the intern will have gained knowledge about the operation and management of a botanical garden, with special emphasis on collections management.

Primary Responsibilities
Collections mapping – hand and ArcMap.
Plant ID and verification.
Plant records – Access database.
Work with volunteers.
Public relations & special events - set-up and take down, answer questions, presentations, assist wherever needed.
Public garden grounds maintenance - weeding, pruning, raking, deadheading, backpack blowing, sweeping and planting.

Qualifications
Enrolled in an accredited two or four year college or university with a focus in horticulture, recreation, or other related field(s).
Experience in botany, horticulture, natural history, or related field.
Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Experience using the PC, including word processing and spreadsheets.
Knowledge of ArcGIS preferred.
Grounds maintenance experience preferred.
Database experience preferred.
Ability to multi-task, handle frequent interruptions.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Ability to respond to public.
Exposure/experience adhering to safety rules and procedures is desirable.
Working knowledge of and familiarity with hand-held power tools and related maintenance equipment.
Basic mechanical skills and manual dexterity.
Knowledge of preventative maintenance processes, techniques, and procedures.
Ability to learn to operate safely the equipment and machinery necessary to perform assigned tasks.
Ability to listen and understand direction/instruction, communicates with team members, and responds to customers tactfully and courteously.
Ability to learn how to access information in BBG plant database.
Ability to locate plants on garden’s mapping system.
Must be able to communicate effectively.

Employee must be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions and provide weather-related gear if/as needed such as rain gear and/or coat. Employees must provide and wear work clothing appropriate to their duties.

Definition of a Student Intern
Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program. Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
