This position needs a hands-on, make it happen individual who enjoys physically doing the work, but at the same time, has the skills and knowledge to oversee, organize, meet with clients, estimate, and lead organic landscape care projects and schedules. Have a strong background in horticulture, soils, and landscape maintenance
Have solid experience in both hands-on and foreman/manager roles

Customer service and estimating skills

Grounds & Nursery Specialist II - $2068-2663/month

Job Title: Grounds and Nursery Specialist 2

South Puget Sound Community College is recruiting for a Grounds and Nursery Specialist 2 to fill a vacant position in the Buildings and Grounds division. This position reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor and is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of campus grounds, landscaping, and athletic fields. This position is also involved in litter control, irrigation system maintenance, and storm water system maintenance. Recruitment is open to all applicants whose knowledge, skills, and abilities meet the qualifications for this position as stated below.

This is a full-time position starting at $2,068.00 per month (Range 29 of the Department of Personnel Salary Schedule) with periodic increases to $2.663.00.

Desirable Qualifications
 Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing; AND one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.
 A valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
 Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time outdoors in all types of weather; bend, climb and reach; and lift, pull or push objects weighing up to 65 pounds.
 Duties must be performed in a safe manner.
 Experience with and ability to climb ladders and operate heavy machinery.

Responsibilities and duties of the Grounds and Nursery Specialist 2 include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Prepare soil for planting; plant, transplant, trim and water plants, trees, flowers and shrubs.
 Seed, place grass sod, mow, irrigate, fertilize and maintain lawns.
 Apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer to lawns, flowers and shrubs.
 Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe and control weeds in flowerbeds and lawns;
 Remove debris, leaves and brush from areas such as sidewalks, streets, and stairs, ramps, parking lots and lawn areas;
 Install, repair and operate sprinkler irrigation systems;
 Inspect and clean storm drains, catch basins, inlets and outlets and maintain retaining structures for the campus holding pond systems.
 Maintain athletic fields by seeding, repairs, mowing, and watering.
 Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc.
 Remove snow and de-ice walkways and roads; operate snow removal equipment.
 Operate power tools and motorized equipment such as tractors, mowers (both hand and riding), weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, aerators, sod cutters, Rototillers, front-end loaders, sweeper blowers, aerators, mobile compressors and small trucks, etc.
 Use hand tools such as shovels, hoses, rakes, pruning shears, loppers, wheelbarrows, hand edgers and pesticide sprayers, etc.
 Clean, service and make repairs to tools and equipment. Clean shop and grounds areas in the Buildings & Grounds compound.
 Clean building courtyard areas not already assigned to building custodians.
