Assistant Gardener - $18.59/hr

SUMMARY

Performs semi-skilled to skilled horticultural tasks in assigned area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

•Assist in the propagating, planting, cultivating, watering, and fertilizing of flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, and other plant materials.
•Plant bulbs, annuals, perennials, ground cover, shrubs, and trees.
•Under supervision, operate spray equipment to apply herbicides and pesticides to shrubs, trees, lawns, and planting areas, and inside electrical substation fences.
•Transplant and prune trees and shrubs.
•Prepare, plant, and maintain planting beds; seeds lawn areas and cuts and transplants sod.
•Operate motor vehicles to, between, and from assigned work locations.
•Maintain required records; prepares necessary reports.
•Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

Valid Washington State Driver License required.

POSITION: Grounds Keeper/Caretaker

REPORTS TO: Owners of the Property

GENERAL SCOPE: Maintain the grounds and buildings of the confidential owners’ summer beach property comprised of approximately 6-7 acres of waterfront property with backlands, a 2,500 square foot main house and a 1,400 square foot caretaker home. Ensure the natural surroundings, lawn and flower beds present a serene, well-cared-for environment – a place where the family can come and use the property as a summer retreat.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Plant and impeccably maintain the grounds, greenhouse and areas (lawn/flowers beds) of the beach.
 Perform repair and maintenance of the yard equipment and buildings.
 Manage special projects should the need arise for hiring contractors.
 Provide expense reporting based on credit card expenditures.
 Ability to lift yard equipment as well as fertilizer bags, chemicals, etc…
 Creatively plant flowers and plants to maintain attractive floral displays.
 Utilize horticultural knowledge to ensure continuing seasonal bloom, specialized gardens/beds
(i.e., perennial gardens).
 Repair and maintain fences.
 Create a place where the family is “taken care of;” ensure the beach property is ready for the family’s use
(i.e., put boat in water, take care of main house, etc.).

EXPERIENCE:
 Proven ability to professionally maintain broad range of gardens, grounds, and pasture land
 Must have previous experience pruning, specifically trees
 Ability to repair and maintain farm/yard machinery, fencing, and buildings
 Strong experience with horticulture highly desired
 25 years work experience preferred

The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden is seeking an energetic person to support its program services and initiatives. The Administrative Assiatant will be responsible for supporting the Executive Director with all aspects of office administration and communication, including but not limited to: human resources, drafting correspondence, events and program management. Garden Internship - $8/hr + credits & housing

FILOLI CENTER – GARDEN INTERNSHIPS & APPRENTICESHIPS
Filoli is a magnificent 654-acre historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated today as a cultural and horticultural center. Features of the 16-acre formal garden include lawn terraces, walled garden, woodland garden, rose garden, sunken garden, bowling green, cutting garden, fruit orchard, knot garden, vegetable garden, native plant garden and greenhouses. There are formal hedges and parterres, rare woody plant specimens, and a 36,000 sq. ft. residence which houses several libraries and a collection of decorative arts. Over 500 acres of the site remain undeveloped, with pristine oak madrone woodlands, redwood forests, chaparral and riparian plant communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Formalized training in practical horticulture, landscape preservation and public garden management. Rotate through the five garden areas and work under the direct supervision of a staff of over 12 horticulturists. Specialized workshops are scheduled in water management, soil testing, plant identification, shear sharpening, hand tools, power equipment, pests and diseases, garden design and history, and scheduling. Tours of the House, gardens and libraries are also offered and trainees are invited to attend educational programs and lectures.

DUTIES
Planting annuals and bulbs, shearing formal hedges, pruning woody ornamentals and fruit trees, thinning and harvesting fruit, maintaining perennial borders, weeding, mowing and edging turf, fertilizing, watering, using hand tools and operating power equipment, managing greenhouses and container stock, monitoring pests and propagating plants. Trainees are expected to keep records and maintain a journal, and apprentices work two days a week on independent projects.

SCHEDULE
Ten-week internships and six-month apprenticeships are offered year-round, with programs in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Current schedules are posted on the Filoli website.
