Communications Assist. - $12-16/hr

Job Description: Communications Assistant University of Washington Botanic Gardens

Part Time Position, approx. 15 hours/week
Pay range = $12 – 16/hour, DOE

The UW Botanic Gardens is seeking a communications assistant to assist with a variety of writing, editing, publicity, outreach, and file management tasks for UW Botanic Gardens programs and projects.

Job duties include producing the quarterly newsletter, preparing and sending press releases, preparing publicity materials for classes and events, updating web content, maintaining files, and managing listserves. This is an hourly position under the general direction of the Education and Outreach Manager, and serves the entire organization. Some editing and writing may be done off-site.

Job Duties Include:
• As assistant editor for the Camas Quarterly newsletter: write and edit articles for length and style; track and file documents, images, and revisions; coordinate production with Publication Services Department; track publication schedule to keep on deadline; apply style guide to ensure consistency
• Produce press releases, flyers, postcards, and web content to publicize classes and events and share news about programs
• Explore new avenues and methods for publicity
• Monitor and manage listserves
• Assist with meeting and event planning, coordination, and logistics
• Work with other staff as needed to produce informational material to the public
• Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• Excellent writing and editing skills and experience in writing for a general audience
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Experience with Word, Excel, web navigation, email software, and listserves
• Basic knowledge of gardening, botany, or biology

Desired qualifications:
• Experience in creating and/or updating web pages
• Knowledge of html, Dreamweaver
• Experience in producing newsletters or publicity materials
• Familiarity with the UW Botanic Gardens, plant collections, and programs
