GENERAL PURPOSE
The Maintenance Specialist performs skilled maintenance activities related to the maintenance of City Parks, Golf Course, and/or Facilities. Operates equipment which does not require a commercial driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years of related maintenance experience in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.


Knowledge of: (A) Maintenance and repair methods and techniques in area of assignment; (B) Basic grounds keeping and equipment maintenance techniques; (C) Safety precautions applicable to area of assignment; (D) Tools and equipment used in area of assignment; (E) Systems maintained in area of assignment.

Skills: (A) Using equipment and tools properly and safely; (B) Applying customer service techniques; (C) Operating vehicles requiring less than a commercial driver's license; (D) Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public; (E) Communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.


LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State Driver’s License; First Aid and CPR certification, and Pesticide License, which must be obtained within six months of employment.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs a variety of skilled activities in maintaining and repairing City grounds, facilities and equipment including such activities as performing turf maintenance to include mowing, trimming, fertilizing, aerating, spraying, and repairing turf; developing and designing landscaping beds; diagnosing and treating landscape problems; performing grounds maintenance activities such as trimming, planting, pruning, and maintaining vegetation, shrub beds, and trees; applying pesticides; and recycling to include chipping and mulching.

Inspects, repairs, and maintains structures, playgrounds, fences, tables, and fountains.

Assembles materials and equipment for service requests including loading of trucks with supplies and materials.

Performs skilled work involving operation of vehicles which do not require a commercial driver's license, such as riding mowers, backhoes, tractors, and front-end loaders. Performs operational checks and simple maintenance activities; reports needed repairs.

Maintains and performs routine repair of irrigation systems, to include installing and repairing irrigation heads, valves, irrigation pipes, signal wires, timers, and pumps.

Maintains reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during the standard
workweek.

May inventory supplies and make minor purchases as needed.




PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling,
crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
