Position Duties
The Urban Forestry Section needs two Gardeners; 1 full-time and 1 part-time. Maintain landscaped areas along high-volume transportation corridors where traffic control measures are required to protect the safety of the work crew and the public. Prune, plant, and perform general maintenance around street trees. Maintain formally landscaped areas in street rights-of-way. Maintain lawn areas, mowing and turf renovation. Apply pesticides as needed (i.e. insecticides and herbicides). Control weed growth. Work with public volunteer groups. Renovate shrub beds and plant annuals and perennials. Operate mowing and other equipment used in landscape maintenance. At times may supervise Assistant Gardener, Laborers, or volunteer staff. Current hours of operation for the landscape section are 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. including mandatory response to emergency calls at off hours both day and night and availability for overtime on weekend days. Work in a multi-cultural work place and customer base with an emphasis on communication for cooperation, collaboration, inclusiveness, anti-racism and pluralism.

Required Qualifications
The equivalent of two years work experience in landscape construction or maintenance, or in the propagation and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees at a conservatory, greenhouse, or nursery. Expertise in the identification of plant materials and knowledge necessary for complex work in plant propagation, transplanting, soil preparation, pruning and spraying of trees, shrubs, and other plant materials. Knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures, tools, and equipment associated with landscape maintenance and gardening and knowledge to determine correct conditions for plant survival or weed control.Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions and in areas exposed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Requires the ability to properly lift loads up to 50 pounds and to perform tasks that require manual dexterity. Handle or work with toxic or hazardous substances.Ability to obtain Washington Public Pesticide operator’s license and Flagger certification required after appointment. WA State driver’s license. Submit a driver’s abstract on request. Pass a pre-employment physical. A background check may be required.

Desired Qualifications
Experience working in landscaped areas along high volume transportation corridors or similar sites where pedestrian and traffic control measures are required for work operations. Experience working in commercial, institutional or public agency landscaping.
