Park Specialist II - $19.77/hr

Our mission is to serve communities and enhance regional quality of life through partnerships, entrepreneurial initiatives, and sound stewardship of parks, trails and public open space. Our system consists of more than 180 parks, 175 miles of regional trails, and 130 miles of backcountry trails.

The Park Specialist II position has the opportunity to work in all these areas, performing skilled and semiskilled maintenance work which includes grounds, facilities, athletic fields, natural resource areas, trail maintenance, new construction, and supportive equipment operation to provide a clean and safe park environment for park visitors. This position performs work in a team environment, out of doors, and in inclement weather.

Duties include:
•Maintain parks grounds, trails, and natural open space areas by pruning, trimming, landscaping, and mowing.
•Maintain and prepare athletic fields, arenas, play areas, picnic shelters, and other park furnishings.
•Plan and direct work projects for a single crew, volunteer/community groups
•Provide custodial care of buildings, and structures by removing litter, sweeping, vacuuming and setting up for events, and other related activities.
•Perform minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting.
•Assist journey-level trades staff as assigned
•Perform minor repairs of walkways, fences, gates, barbecues fixtures, doors, windows, and other parks fixtures.
•Construct, renovate and repair hiking trails, trail structures, bridges, and other Parks’ structures; install signage and fencing.
•Operate and maintain equipment such as riding mowers, tractor w/attachments, weed-eaters, edgers and chain saws.
•Operate park maintenance vehicles.
•Operate personal computer to complete timesheets, read and respond to email, and perform assorted administrative tasks.
•Actively participate in assigned work team.
•Complete work assignments efficiently using initiative, problem-solving skills, and good judgment.
•Provide for the welfare and safety of park visitors by giving assistance and information, including park rules and regulations.
•Promote good relationships with public and user groups.
•Some positions may require obtaining a Class A CDL and/or a spray license within 90 days of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
•Twelve months of full-time park maintenance work experience or similar experience requiring independent responsibility for completion of work assignments.
•Specialized training or education in related maintenance or trades may be substituted on a month for month basis.
•Knowledge of parks maintenance operations and procedures including trail maintenance and construction, landscaping and grounds-keeping and facilities.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
•Ability to communicate effectively with staff, the public and supervisors both verbally and in writing.
•Ability to work effectively in a team environment and promote cooperation among team members.
•Demonstrated ability to positively interact with a variety of people in a diverse work environment.
•Experience working with the general public and dealing with difficult situations on a daily basis. •Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
•Basic knowledge of building craft and mechanical trades.
•Basic mathematics skills.
•Skill in performing minor repairs in the field as required.
•Skill in leading, directing and training others is highly desirable.
•Demonstrated ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
•Experience with personal computers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•Degree in Natural Resources, Forestry, Parks and Recreation, or other related field
•Other certifications or licenses related to other job duties listed above

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Possession of a valid Washington State Drivers license at the time of appointment required. •The ability to use power tools and operate equipment on a continuous basis.
•The ability to perform heavy physical labor with weights up to 75 pounds.
•The ability to work at ground level and roof-top heights and all levels in between.
•An offer of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment physical and criminal and driving history background checks.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate must be able to work on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as noise, dust and traffic.
