Parks Landscape Laborer - $10-15/hr DOE

POSITION: Seasonal Parks Maintenance Landscape Laborer
(Full-time, temporary position until September 30, 2011)

WORK HOURS: All positions work 40 hours per week, and have varying hours depending on the position hired for. Parks Maint positions require weekend and evening work.

SALARY: $10.00-$15.00 per hour (Depending on experience and position.)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide assistance in maintaining and repairing City parks and open spaces (trails, planter beds, and road side areas) in order to ensure safety, cleanliness and aesthetic appeal, as well as to meet customer needs and standards. May also perform other maintenance duties as assigned. Heavy constant labor required. Raking, pruning, edging turf, line trimming etc.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PARKS Positions
• Landscaping clean-up, pruning, edging, weeding, picking up piles of vegetation, vegetation control.
• Perform mowing and edging in and around sidewalks and trees in parks, street ends and other City properties.
• Assist with restroom cleaning, litter control, and daily park clean up and inspection activities.
• Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
• Ability to work well with others, stay on task, and take direction from Team Leads and Supervisors.
• Ability to drive a city vehicle; have a good driving record and current and valid Washington state driver’s license.
• Provide excellent customer service to Park users.

• Must be able to work weekend and evening hours and a variable schedule.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
• High school education or equivalent.
• Desired 3 or more years of experience in landscape field. Must be able to reference prior employment.
• Good verbal communication skills in the English language (listening, giving feedback and speaking up) as well as effective interpersonal and customer relation skills are essential in a team environment. Basic writing skills are required, along with the ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to practice safety by wearing appropriate protective clothing, using safety equipment, and follow good housekeeping and safety procedures.
• Current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
• Completion of a nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse.
• Completion of an I-9 Form documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
• This is a NON SMOKING, and DRUG FREE POSITION.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Various types of tools and equipment are used including: push mowers, weed eaters, power hedgers, edgers, pruners, hand shears, hand saws, shovels, brooms, hand tools, ladders, leaf blowers, fertilizer spreaders, and traffic control devices. Future work practices may necessitate the use of different tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Seasonal employees risk physical hazards from working in and around traffic, heavy machinery, heights and other underground utilities. Exposure to noise, vibration, hazardous and toxic materials, fumes, gases and odors is routine.
Work requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform heavy continuous manual labor under all kinds of weather conditions. Work activities include combinations of sitting, standing and walking and the ability to lift 50-100 pounds on a FREQUENT basis. Seasonal employees must be able to see, hear and smell in order to detect problems and be responsive to their own safety, as well as that of fellow employees.
Seasonal employees must follow appropriate safety procedures and use of protective clothing and equipment including, steel-toed shoes and boots, hard hats, eye/ear protection, rain gear, gloves, traffic control equipment.
Maintenance teams operate in a smoke and drug free work environment for their health, safety and productivity, as well as that of their customers.
