Technical Aide Horticulture - $1,225-1377/month

LAKE WASHINGTON TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Part Time 18 hours per week

SALARY: $1,225.80 - $1,377.45 Monthly

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for working with students and instructional staff in a team approach on student activities such as drill, practice, and research after instruction has been given by the technical instructor. Provide hands-on experience with specific technical manuals, resources and equipment in a class/lab setting under the instructor’s guidance. Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the occupational area by industry visits, reading, trade shows, and other appropriate activities. This position is dependent on enrollment and reports directly to the course instructor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Interpret and clarify technical information and program materials related to the horticulture program; follow and interpret policies, procedures, standard practices as they pertain to instruction and the college as a whole
Add to the knowledge and skills taught in specific curriculum units with the instructor for use in the classroom or lab
Coordinate instructional remediation with technical support staff; administer hands-on skill tests; re-teach technical hands-on skills; monitor student projects or job workmanship
Monitor for correct safety, sanitation and/or hazardous waste practices as appropriate
Provide greenhouse operations support during the quarter and on school breaks including plant maintenance, pest and disease control strategies; assist with propagation activities and maintain horticulture area grounds; treat greenhouses for pests as needed, using required pesticide spray equipment
Demonstrate industry practices, attitudes, and procedures to students; maintain currency with industry practices and strengthen relationships with related professional associations, gardening clubs, local nurseries and horticulture experts
Provide support necessary to the horticulture program to maintain technical supplies, tools, and systems of shop or classroom organization regarding instruction, purchasing, inventory, and/or abatement; maintain program website and blog
Develop and maintain industry intern ship, co-op, and extern ship sites and monitor student progress as directed by instructor; compile and communicate industry job opportunities and events to students and alumni
Provide leadership in repair and construction of occupational training devices
Assist with planning and supervision of labs
Maintain currency with industry practices; attend advisory committee meetings and perform advisory committee curriculum related assignments; provide support for program related activities such as special projects, plant sales, trips, and garden shows
May supervise instructional assistants, work study students, temporary help and summer helpers
Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality; other related duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED with two years minimum experience in horticulture or a graduate of a horticulture program
Proficient in understanding, interpreting, and explaining the vocabulary/nomenclature specific to the occupational area and in performing the specific occupational skills taught in the curriculum
Ability to work independently and communicate well with staff, students, and vendors; ability to work with cultural and age diverse populations
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; proficient computer skills and knowledge of office practices procedures; ability to prioritize tasks and time efficiently
Posses a current First Aid/CPR card and pesticide applicator’s license or be willing to obtain same within 30 days of employment
Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH) designation preferred

COMPENSATION:
Salary range is $1225.80 - $1377.45 per month; salary placement for current classified employees is per the classified bargained agreement. This position works 18 hours per week. Working hours may vary, but are typically between the hours of 8:00am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday; schedule to be determined by the supervisor. This is a union-covered position, which requires the payment of membership dues/representation fees.
