The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG) Internship Program is designed to provide practical hands-on experience in the following areas of interest: garden maintenance, propagation, nursery management, and retail management.


Botanical Garden & Nursery Internship

One full-time position available
May through August/September 2008 Salary: $9.50/hour
Our internship will provide practical hands-on experience in garden maintenance, propagation and nursery management. Learn how to care for a 22-acre garden, including proper pruning and planting techniques, landscape design, weed control, garden renovation, irrigation and plant identification.

Gain valuable experience in the operation and maintenance of a highly specialized nursery with emphasis on propagation techniques. Learn propagation methods including grafting, cuttings, seed sowing and hand pollination as well as greenhouse operation, transplanting, inventory control, data entry and plant identification. Detail oriented and mechanical ability or aptitude helpful. Some weekend work required. Scheduling can be negotiated.




General Information

The RSBG is a 22 acre garden featuring one of the largest collections of Rhododendron species in the world. Over 4,500 forms of 488 species are displayed in a natural woodland setting. Additional plant collections include ferns, maples, heathers, bamboo, alpines and carnivorous plants. Special features include the Alpine Garden, Pond Garden, Hardy Fern display garden, Gazebo, Gift Shop and Plant Sales Pavilion. The garden is located in Federal Way near I-5 and Highway 18.

The garden is supported by the Rhododendron Species Foundation (RSF), an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the study, cultivation, display and distribution of Rhododendron species. Internship, Botanical Garden - $10/hr

One Year Internship
In one the Pacific Northwest’s premium gardens

A one-year internship is available at the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. The position is available starting early summer with some flexibility to accommodate applicants’ schedules. The work is focused on garden maintenance and it is essential that candidates be prepared for rigorous physical labor. Tasks include watering, pruning, potting and some propagation. There will also be an opportunity to learn the plant accession data base.

The Miller Garden is a three-acre garden with an exceptional collection of woody and herbaceous plants. The facilities include a small greenhouse, an alpine house, cold frames, lath house and a small nursery to support garden operations. We are open to the public by appointment only.

We are a very small staff so it is imperative that candidates have a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic. Horticulture or related education is preferred. Priority is given to applicants currently in school or recently graduated.

The position will last one year from the start date and is funded for 20 hours per week with a wage of $10.00 per hour. Some weekend work is required. The E. C. Miller Botanical Garden is an equal opportunity employer.

Arborist-Gardener Lead - $DOE

Position Description:
Perform and lead personnel (Gardeners and Utility Workers) in the skilled work of the development and care of the campus landscaped grounds, specializing in tree care. Work and coordinate with other skilled trades as required to maintain campus buildings, utilities and grounds. Utilizing available computer applications, plan and prepare work assignments for the Gardeners, Utility Workers and temporary employees based on campus maintenance standards, including raking and removing leaves and litter from the grounds and removing snow and ice from assigned pathways and stairs.

Assess the health and safety of campus trees and take the necessary steps to improve their vigor and/or abate hazards as necessary.

Duties include:
• Monitoring trees which show signs of decline • Removing trees that are dead, dying or otherwise show a risk to public safety • Knowing and performing proper tree pruning techniques as well as cabling and bracing • Maintaining a campus tree inventory and documentation of tree removals and assessments • Conducting tree appraisals when requested •

Maintaining and servicing tree maintenance tools and equipment. Maintain plants through accepted horticultural standards; prepare ground for lawns, plants, trees and seasonal flowers; plant seeds, bulbs, shrubs and trees.

Perform layout and job planning tasks on routine maintenance and construction projects, and read and interpret blueprints.

Monitor and adjust irrigation systems and write work orders for irrigation repair.

Operate commercial motorized equipment such as automobiles, trucks, including dump trucks, forklifts, tractors, mowers, tillers, sweepers, chain saws, trimmers and sprayers and front-end loaders, and trailers and use a variety of hand implements and tools.

Order supplies, equipment, and tools required for projects. Inspect projects to ensure compliance with local standards and codes.

Inspect projects to ensure satisfactory compliance with design, instruction, and safe work practices, and maintain maintenance project records.

Assist in employee interviews and make hiring recommendations; provide information for employee performance reviews to supervisor/manager.

Communicate with Facilities Services’ shops and Engineering Services to facilitate work.

Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the shop supervisor or manager.

Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures. Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service. Attend all required meetings and trainings.

May assist in development of departmental budget.

Requirements:
Physical ability to do required work AND two years of experience as a Gardener or equivalent work involving grounds maintenance, plant care and landscape construction OR Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience as stated above AND one year of college level training in botany, horticulture, forestry, landscape, irrigation or allied field OR equivalent education/experience. Certification as an arborist, tree worker and aerial bucket truck operator
