Position Duties
This is a temporary, full-time position. Work includes plan review and field inspections to identify and evaluate trees as a component of the approval process for development proposals and oversight of projects during construction. Work will be conducted under the general direction of a lead Forester who will set standards for consistent evaluation of trees, tree conflicts and requirements for tree protection. Field review includes the identification of trees and other plant materials, tree diseases or defects, pests, cultural and nutritional deficiencies, and recommendation of appropriate corrective treatments including pruning, soil conditioning or other measures to reduce development-related impacts on trees. Perform inspection and approval of trees and other plant material prior to installation and acceptance of contractor work to plant and maintain trees and plant material installed on City-owned and controlled property and on private property when appropriate. Contact citizens and community groups for the purpose of responding to inquiries and resolving complaints. Participate in and oversee sidewalk restoration projects that have tree root conflicts, which may include root pruning, operation of air tools and coordination with Seattle Department of Transportation office and field staff representing other divisions and outside departments. Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Required Qualifications
Three years of experience in the care, planting, and maintenance of trees and plant materials, and the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Natural Resources, Botany, or related field, and demonstrated experience in supervision or lead work. Required to work in all weather conditions and stand, bend and walk for extended periods. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals and pesticides is required. WA State driver’s license. Submit a complete driver’s abstract on request. Pass a pre-employment physical. A background check may be required.

Desired Qualifications
Three years experience in tree identification, tree assessment for condition, tree evaluation to establish monetary value, and prescription of tree protection measures. One year of experience in review of development plans to identify tree impacts and compatibility with tree retention goals. Able to manage and prioritize work load of multiple jobs in combination of office and field environments including tracking and documentation of project work, project reporting, correspondence, and coordination with other staff, contractors, and community members. ISA Certified Arborist. Proficient with Word, Excel, Access. Experience with ArcGIS. Excellent communication skills. Good working knowledge of tree root physiology and soils. Knowledge of construction materials and techniques. Experience using air excavation tools, stump grinders, and chain saws.
