Willows Lodge Quarterly Intern Position

Willows Lodge, an 84 room boutique hotel in Woodinville, WA, is currently accepting applications for its quarterly internship position.

The beautiful 5 acre grounds are sustainably managed with innovative practices implemented over the last decade. The inclusion of herbs, food and ornamental horticulture on the same site along with nutrient cycling, water-wise irrigation strategies, IPM and in-house maintenance and design make Willows Lodge a unique commercial landscape to expand horticulture students’ practical experience.

Each quarter has its special attributes leaf fall in autumn, irrigation & lawns in summer, spring and fall planting, summer and winter pruning and a consistent, focused attention to crafting beauty in a unique hotel setting. Planning & implementation of garden renovations, indoor plant maintenance, the use of IPM strategies for pest control and, of course, the daily maintenance routines are included in the opportunities this internship provides.

Job Summary:
This position is an opportunity for students in horticulture programs at local colleges to gain practical experience maintaining, renovating and crafting beauty in the gardens at Willows Lodge. The landscape management at Willows Lodge rests on a foundation of sustainability, using IPM protocols and bio-rational management.

Qualifications:
• Present participation in a horticultural program at a local college
• Interest in plant material suitable for NW natural gardens
• Strength--able to lift 30# repeatedly in the course of a day
• Physically capable to handle--wheelbarrows, shoveling, hauling, bending, weeding, composting
• Ability to learn and safely operate grounds-keeping equipment i.e. mower, blower, hedger, incidental to performance of duties
• Understanding or desire to learn IPM, biological soil and plant management helpful
• Detail oriented
• Ability to interact with staff and public in a courteous & professional manner

Job Description:
• Ability to physically work outside in all weather
• Hauling and regular lifting
• Weeding and raking
• Irrigation, basic maintenance & repair
• Maintain gravel pathways
• Hedging and shearing
• Mowing & edging lawns
• Blowing & raking leaves
• Seasonal pond cleaning & maintenance
• Maintain equipment, tools
• Plant material removal and replacement
• Pruning
• Hardscape maintenance (i.e. pressure wash & blow)
• Hands-on implementation of renovation projects
