Techical Assistant II - $15-17/hr

TITLE: Technical Assistant II, Nutrition Education -- WSU Square Foot Nutrition Project

APPOINTMENT STATUS: Temporary, 24-28 hours per week, 24 weeks assigned during the school year 2011-2012

LOCATION: Washington State University Pierce County Extension, 3602 Pacific Avenue, Suite B, Tacoma, WA 98418-5739

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The main goal of the Square Foot Nutrition Project (SFNP) is to improve nutritional practices of students in grades 1-5 through vegetable gardening, cooking and experiential nutrition education activities. The Nutrition Educator will work in Title I schools in Pierce County (50% or more of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch) teaching nutrition using a set curriculum and a variety of assigned teaching methods. The Nutrition Educator will teach twelve 1-hour classes per week for 24 assigned weeks from October to June. Monthly educator trainings take place at the WSU Pierce County Extension office for one to three hours depending upon schedule needs.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Square Foot Nutrition Project Coordinator and Pierce County Nutrition Faculty.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
May include any or all of the following:

• Review and prepare pre-written lesson plans in provided curriculum
• Present garden enhanced nutrition lessons to youth in Pierce County elementary schools
• Purchase materials and supplies for project in consultation with Project Coordinator following established university procedures
• Maintain records; administer evaluations and complete reports that monitor progress of teacher and student project participants.
• Use only research-based USDA and WSU-supported nutrition and gardening information.
• Complete other duties to support SFNP as required for effective program delivery

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
• Bachelor's degree in nutrition and/or horticulture or any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis
• Washington State driver's license, car with required auto insurance, home telephone and completion of Washington State Patrol background check

Desired:
• Documented experience or education working with youth in schools
• Demonstrated ability to deliver educational programs
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member is required
• Demonstrated ability to work with culturally and economically diverse populations
• Experience working with school teachers
• Experience working with school gardens
• Must lift and transport materials, food items and audio-visual equipment up to 30 pounds

Wages and Application Process:
Salary $15-$17/hr DOE
Mileage within school districts is reimbursed round trip from the Extension Office to scheduled schools
