Cottage Lake Gardens is a one-acre garden with an exceptional collection of woody and herbaceous plants located on the eastern shore of Cottage Lake just west of Woodinville, Washington. It has one of the largest collections of Trillium in the United States. While the garden is a private garden, its goal is to become a public display garden to be used as an educational resource for horticultural education and conservation with a respected internship program.
Areas of Horticultural Training:
• Primary focus is on garden maintenance and specialized care of rare and unusual plants. This will include bed preparation and renovation, weeding, mulching, deadheading and pruning
• Plant propagation by cuttings, division and sowing of seeds
• Transplanting and repotting
• Composting
• Drip irrigation
• Learning to identify botanical collection by both common and botanical names
• Inventorying, mapping and tagging plants in botanical collection
• Working in garden’s small nursery
• Plant sale preparation.
Prerequisites: This program is designed for people who:
• Have a strong interest in horticulture and a desire to learn
• Are motivated and self-starting, comfortable occasionally working alone
• Are able to do physical labor
• Don’t mind working outside in rain or shine
• Are 18 years old or over
• Gardening experience is helpful but not necessary
Schedule:
• Interns can create an individual schedule that works best for them
• Minimum garden shift of 3 hours/week
• Internships program runs from March 1 to December 1
• Interns work directly with owner, Susie Egan.
Compensation:
Interns can work on an hourly basis at $10 per hour.

The Arboretum Curation Office maintains a records center for all plant specimens in the collection. This information serves as the primary resource for collection curation, interpretation, management and planning. This is an exceptional opportunity to ‘dig deeper’ and become more familiar with the largest woody plant collection in the region.
Position Description:
Volunteers’ time is divided in roughly equal parts between indoor and outdoor tasks, year round.
• Outdoor activities include field inventory of specified collection areas, specimen condition verification and plant label placement. Inclement weather is taken into consideration with field work.
• Indoor activities include computer data entry, records research and collection map editing.
Skills:
• Sharp attention to detail.
• Be comfortable working with Excel as it is one of the two major computer programs you’ll be using. The other program is BG-Base which you will be trained on. Both programs are Windows based.
• The ability to read maps and navigate in the field.
Hours:
Thursday & Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., 3-4 hours/week minimum.
