Dunn Gardens Staff Gardener Job Description (available January, 2011)
The Staff Gardener is an hourly part time position, initially for three days per week for 48-50 weeks per year, and reports directly to the Curators.
The Staff Gardener works with the Grounds Manager and the Curators to achieve the trust’s goals for the conservation of the gardens:
• Implement the plans and projects of the curators
• Perform seasonal garden tasks appropriate for a woodland garden: planting, fertilizing, trimming, deadheading, pruning, mulching, weeding, watering, raking, and cleanup
• Monitor and record tree health, with advice from a contracted arborist, to implement the Heritage Tree Program
• Assist other staff gardeners with their individual and shared duties
• Assist the Grounds Manager in maintenance of garden tools and machinery
• Participate in Dunn Gardens Conservation Committee (DGCC) meetings when necessary
Apprise the DGCC Chairperson and/or Curators of issues of concern, safety, maintenance, deterioration, predation, or trespass in the gardens
Assist the Board committees in preparations for special events and activities in the gardens
Assist the Grounds Manager to research, contact, consult and take bids from other skilled horticulturalists or arborists for particular contracted duties outside of scope of routine duties
Restock and clean public bathroom to be presentable for visitors
Assist the Grounds Manager to supervise and/or advise periodic work parties that volunteer in the gardens: i.e., Seattle Works, board members, docents, and others
Maintain a harmonious relationship in the neighborhood and an appreciation and understanding of the gardens for visitors
The Dunn Gardens is a seven acre Olmsted Bros. designed garden in Northwest Seattle and is on the National Register of Historic Places. More information about the gardens is on our website www.dunngardens.org
