Position Description:
This postion serves as the senior gardener for the Thornton Creek Water Quality Channel in NE Seattle. Among the primary duties are serving as site contact between Seattle Public Utilities and the adjacent properties, general public and other SPU staff. This position implements best management practices for upland, wetland, and riparian landscapes. Recognition and implementation of environmental protections for Thornton Creek is critical. This position also oversees maintenance of 63 facilities/sites, including some that contain Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). This position reports to the Grounds Maintenance Crew Chief.
Job Responsibilities:
Plan, lead, assign, and direct the work of one or more subordinates engaged in various aspects of landscape maintenance, construction, or street tree planting at one or more locations.
Lead the work of a major horticultural unit such as a greenhouse, nursery, conservatory, or ornamental landscape installation that includes maintenance of a complex water quality channel, environmentally critical area's (ECAs), highly visible ornamental landscape installations, and may include Green Stormwater Infrastructure features.
-Diagnose the cause/effect of any insect, disease, nutrient deficiency, or weed infestation and determine the most sustainable and least toxic solution in accordance with accepted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.
-Develop, recommend and implement the type of landscape maintenance, rebuilding, or construction required for a given location. Direct the implementation of landscape designs from blueprints and plans.
-Perform aspects of plant care including soil analysis and adjust nutrients as required. Conduct soil preparation and mixing. Interpret soil analysis and manage accordingly with compost, compost tea or appropriate organic matter application.
-Make recommendations for ordering new materials, maintain time, pesticide control, and other related records, and prepare required reports.
-Assist in the preparation and justification of annual budget information. Maintain records on all expenditures.
-Perform structural pruning, pedestrian clearance pruning according to International Society of Arboricultural standards.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to handle or work with toxic/hazardous substances. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, and in areas of high vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
Experience:
Three years work experience in landscape construction or maintenance, or in the propagation and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees
Education/Experience Equivalency:
Combination of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
Certification/License(s):
Current Washington State driver's license.
Washington Public Pesticide Operators license required witihin six (6) months of appointment
Desirable Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Environmental or Ecosystem Management or equivalent work/educational experience in the field of low impact development or surface water/urban watershed management
-Experience identifying Pacific NW native and wetland vegetation and other common ornamental landscape plants
-Experience identifying common, invasive and noxious weeds and understand the control methods for each.
-Demonstrated strong knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and procedures.
-Demonstrated understanding of Green Stormwater Infrastructure functions and design.
-Aquatics or Public Health endorsement on the Public Pesticide Operator's license
-Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and MAXIMO or other work management system
