Job Description:
Monthly garden maintenance tasks, working with the owner or on your own: raking, digging, planting, transplanting, light pruning, thinning or dividing perennials, cleanup, and filling the yard waste container. Occasional tasks include refreshing the wood chip paths, spreading compost, or moving a bunch of dirt from over here to over there.

Qualifications Required:
Experience with, or an intuitive feel for, all aspects of making plants grow, especially planting, water and sun requirements, and soil ammendments. Able to work on your own with a minimum of supervision or instruction. Able to put up with the hard work and crummy weather for the pleasure of seeing the plants you are caring for flourish.
Qualifications Preferred:
Knowledge of shade gardeing and native plants. Experience with or interest in drip irrigation.

Grounds Maint. Manager - $42-48K/year

SALARY:
Exempt; $42,000-$48,000 per year, DOE + excellent benefits

WORK SCHEDULE:
Mon - Fri, 8am-5pm. Occasional weekend hours may be required.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for leading all general grounds maintenance activities on a university campus. Includes coordination of work activity with multiple departments. Lead and coach grounds staff to create a positive, productive and aesthetically pleasing campus landscape. Participate in university sustainability planning. Serves as part of the Facilities Management leadership team. Reports to the Director of Facilities Management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Plan, develop, prioritize, and manage efficient grounds maintenance tasks and horticultural programs to assure plant health, cleanliness, and public safety are attained on a daily basis.
-Set priorities, supervise and evaluate 9 staff employees and up to 15 student employees.
-Assure all rules and regulations of the university are known and observed by all grounds staff.
-Monitor and maintain the inventory of grounds supplies and equipment.
-Plan maintenance programs and supervise maintenance of all athletic fields and recreation facilities. Coordinate with other departments to ensure that facilities are ready for events.
-Plan, coordinate and manage all grounds related projects (in-house and contracted) and develop annual capital project requests. Develop, manage and analyze the grounds budget.
-Interview and hire personnel to fill vacancies as they occur.
-Work with landscape architects to design and install landscaping around construction sites.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
-Knowledge of landscaping and ground maintenance procedures, equipment, chemicals.
-Ability to lead a team and conduct employee training sessions.
-Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
-Knowledge of native plant use in landscaping, water-wise practices, low impact development practices and integrated pest management plans.
-Interpersonal and customer relations skills including the ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse community and across all organizational levels/departments.
-Working knowledge of MS Office software programs and e-mail systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
-Regularly required to stand, walk, lift, bend, stoop, and kneel and occasionally climb and balance.
-Must be able to regularly lift/or move up to 25 lbs, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.
-Operate grounds equipment involving dexterous use of both hands and feet simultaneously.
-Good hearing and vision.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-5 or more years experience in grounds maintenance. 3 years experience leading a team.
-Technical school or other training in landscape management. High school diploma or GED.
-Valid Driver’s License (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2yrs).
-Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, physical exam including drug screen, pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training; and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5yr Employment Abstract).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-AA or BA degree. Certified arborist and/or certified in Landscape Architecture.
-Knowledge of Excel and budget management software, such as Banner.
-Knowledge of and experience in the maintenance of sports turf surfaces.

Qualifications
