We seek a skilled and horticulturally trained collaborator and communicator who facilitates and manages daily on-site gardening operations while directing 1-2 gardeners. This individual is in the field 100% of the time, all weeks of the year.
Eligible candidates for the position must possess the following:
• Min. three to five years experience maintaining landscapes in the Puget Sound region

Duties:
Under direct supervision, perform routine horticultural maintenance of UW Living Plant Collections. These duties may include the following.
- Brush clearing: removal of woody brush and invasive plants, plus follow up controls and site restoration
- Stump removal: assist w/grinding, back-hoe, chaining-out
Weed management: hand, mechanical, may assist in herbicide application (under supervision of SPOC licensee) - Soil management: cultivation, topdressing with organic mulches, installation of repair of drainage in planting beds.
- Mulching: applying of wood chip mulch to landscape beds.
- Fertilization: applying granular and liquid fertilizers.
- Irrigation: setup and operate manual sprinklers for irrigation of collection plantings and assist with maintenance and repairs for irrigation systems.
- Pruning: seasonal pruning of trees and shrubs for form and training.
- Planting and transplanting: installation of container and balled and burlapped trees and shrubs, the digging B & B of plants to be transplanted, planting seed and transplants for seasonal color.
- Landscape plant grooming: leaf and debris removal, raking, etc. from selected areas.
- Application of horticultural chemicals: may assist in application of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides and other materials as prescribed (under supervision of SPOC licensee)
- Hardscapes: install and maintain interpretive signs, benches, fencing, rock work, and small trails and stairs.
- Landscape renovation: site preparation including soil and plant installation, trail work, rock installation and the ability to follow written prints and instructions.
- Use of manual tools and equipment: rakes, hand edger, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears, and pesticide sprayers.
- Operate power and motorized equipment: examples; weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, tillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, back-hoe, small trucks, utility vehicles, lawn mowers, stump grinders, and sod cutters.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements:
Physical ability to do the required work AND 2 year experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care & cultivation, landscape installation OR equivalent horticulture education/experience. Possession of a valid State of Washington Drivers License.

The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG) Internship Program is designed to provide practical hands-on experience in the following areas of interest: garden maintenance & renovation, propagation, nursery management, and retail management.
2011 Opportunities
Botanical Garden & Nursery Internship
One full-time position available in 2011 for up to 6 months - Spring through Fall 2011
Schedule to be negotiated. Some weekend work required.
Wages: $10/hour
Garden Management: Learn how to care for a 22-acre botanical garden, including proper pruning and planting techniques, landscape design, weed control, renovation, irrigation, and plant identification.
Nursery Management: Gain valuable experience in the operation and maintenance of a highly specialized nursery with emphasis on propagation techniques. Learn propagation methods including grafting, cuttings, seed sowing and hand pollination as well as greenhouse operation, transplanting, inventory control, data entry and plant identification. Detail oriented and mechanical ability or aptitude helpful.
Retail Management Internship
One 8-week position available Spring 2011
Part-time (24 hours/week – Schedule can be negotiated; however, at least one day must be on the weekend – prefer both weekend days, if possible)

Learn how to manage the RSBG Plant Sales Pavilion including pricing, displaying plant material, maintaining and stocking sales facility, creating labels and signage, supervising volunteer assistants and record-keeping. Enthusiastic self-starter sought.

The RSBG is a 22 acre garden featuring one of the largest collections of Rhododendron species in the world. Over 4,500 forms of 488 species are displayed in a natural woodland setting. Additional plant collections include ferns, maples, heathers, bamboo, alpines and carnivorous plants. Special features include the Stumpery, the Alpine Garden, Pond Garden, Hardy Fern display garden and Meconopsis Meadow. The garden is located in Federal Way near I-5 and Highway 18. The garden is supported by the Rhododendron Species Foundation (RSF), an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the study, cultivation, display and distribution of Rhododendron species. A one-year internship is available at the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. The position is available starting about the 1st of July with some flexibility to accommodate applicants’ schedules. The position is focused on garden maintenance and it is essential that candidates be prepared for rigorous physical labor and work in inclement weather. Tasks include weeding, watering, pruning, potting and some propagation. There will also be an opportunity to learn the plant accession data base.
The Miller Garden is a three-acre garden with an exceptional collection of woody and herbaceous plants. The facilities include a small greenhouse, an alpine house, cold frames, lath house and a small nursery to support garden operations. We are open to the public by appointment only.
We are a very small staff so it is imperative that candidates have a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic. Horticulture or related education is preferred. Priority is given to applicants currently in school or recently graduated.

Lawn Care Technician -$14-$18/hr
Landscape company seeking a subcontractor to take care of mowing jobs in Bellevue, Issaquah, and Sammamish. The jobs will start by April 1 and continue to October 31. There will be 10 to 15 hours of work per week.
The duties involve mowing and edging lawn areas every two weeks. The subcontractor needs to provide own transportation with ability to transport lawn equipment (lawn mower, string trimmer, and blade edger).
