DUTIES:

Plant Services Specialists enforce state and federal laws and regulations governing the handling, sale or shipment of nursery stock, bulbs, cut plant material and fruits and vegetables in an assigned geographic area. The main goal of the Square Foot Nutrition Project (SFNP) is to improve nutritional practices of students in grades 1-5 through vegetable gardening, cooking and experiential nutrition education activities. The Nutrition Educator will work in Title I schools in Pierce County (50% or more of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch) teaching nutrition using a set curriculum and a variety of assigned teaching methods. The Nutrition Educator will teach twelve 1-hour classes per week for 24 assigned weeks from October to June. Monthly educator trainings take place at the WSU Pierce County Extension office for one to three hours depending upon schedule needs.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Square Foot Nutrition Project Coordinator and Pierce County Nutrition Faculty.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
May include any or all of the following:

• Review and prepare pre-written lesson plans in provided curriculum
• Present garden enhanced nutrition lessons to youth in Pierce County elementary schools
• Purchase materials and supplies for project in consultation with Project Coordinator following established university procedures
• Maintain records; administer evaluations and complete reports that monitor progress of teacher and student project participants.
• Use only research-based USDA and WSU-supported nutrition and gardening information.
• Complete other duties to support SFNP as required for effective program delivery

-Plan, coordinate and manage all grounds related projects (in-house and contracted) and develop annual capital project requests. Develop, manage and analyze the grounds budget.
-Interview and hire personnel to fill vacancies as they occur.
-Work with landscape architects to design and install landscaping around construction sites.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
-Knowledge of landscaping and ground maintenance procedures, equipment, chemicals.
-Ability to lead a team and conduct employee training sessions.
-Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
-Knowledge of native plant use in landscaping, water-wise practices, low impact development practices and integrated pest management plans.

Position Overview
The PNA Groundskeeper position is a part time seasonal position responsible for caring for and cleaning the PNA Campus grounds.

Essential Responsibilities
• Grounds care - weed trimming, mowing, edging, watering, weeding and debris clean-up.
• Maintaining compost.
• Providing some limited support (set-up, emergent problem solving and light custodial) to the Phinney Farmer’s Market Fridays afternoons, June3 through October 7th.
• Special projects, such as supervising volunteers and on-call custodial would be an option, DOE interest and experience.
• Work 8 hours per week from the first week in June through the first week in October.
• This position reports to our head custodian.
• Hours may be divided into two shifts or, if desired, be a single 8 hour shift on Fridays.

Filoli is a magnificent 654-acre historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated today as a cultural and horticultural center. Features of the 16-acre formal garden include lawn terraces, walled garden, woodland garden, rose garden, sunken garden, bowling green, cutting garden, fruit orchard, knot garden, vegetable garden, native plant garden and greenhouses. There are formal hedges and parterres, rare woody plant specimens, and a 36,000 sq. ft. residence which houses several libraries and a collection of decorative arts. Over 500 acres of the site remain undeveloped, with pristine oak madrone woodlands, redwood forests, chaparral and riparian plant communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Formalized training in practical horticulture, landscape preservation and public garden management. Rotate through the five garden areas and work under the direct supervision of a staff of over 12 horticulturists. Specialized workshops are scheduled in water management, soil testing, plant identification, shear sharpening, hand tools, power equipment, pests and diseases, garden design and history, and scheduling. Tours of the House, gardens and libraries are also offered and trainees are invited to attend educational programs and lectures.

DUTIES
Planting annuals and bulbs, shearing formal hedges, pruning woody ornamentals and fruit trees, thinning and harvesting fruit, maintaining perennial borders, weeding, mowing and edging turf, fertilizing, watering, using hand tools and operating power equipment, managing greenhouses and container stock, monitoring pests and propagating plants. Trainees are expected to keep records and maintain a journal, and apprentices work two days a week on independent projects.

The mission of Seattle Audubon is to cultivate and lead a community that values and protects birds and the natural environment.
